Commentary: The change of work week at MVC had been announced in the latter part of April 2010.
MVC employees started calling the Local at this time, but were rebuked, advising "it was a done deal."
MFC Mary R. Walker, an MVC employee, called the Local and was advised that no grievance had been
filed in the matter.
A grievance was prepared by MFC and submitted by Mary to the MVC. MFC has given it's word not to
interfere in the negotiations by revealing the content of the greivance. We shall adhere to that
agreement until further notice.
In response to the grievance by Mary, Roeder inflated the Rat in front of the MVC Agency on Stockton
Street.
Later a member asked Roeder what was the Local doing about the work week change. Roeder advised
this member that there wasn't enough support for a grievance because members laughed and
ridiculed her when she tried to garner support with the inflated Rat.
Then on 7/1/10, without warning, Roeder drops the bombshell flyer below on the members. Needless to
say, members were livid. One member told Roeder as she was passing out the flyer, that she was
"tired of this local's bullshit and was dropping out of the union." Incredulously, Roeder advised this
member that she would not get her raises if she dropped out. Numerous members sought drop out
cards but were advised that the window period for dropouts had closed, until next year.
Roeder was ran out of the MVC lobby by disgruntled members and failed to appear at the MVC public
announcement of the workweek change to the media.
There were subsequent negotiations regarding the work week change with MVC, however, Roeder
afraid of the backlash from members sent the Local's secretary, Pat Stetler, to negotiate on behalf of
the members. Members inundated the Local's phone lines demanding a a bona-fide representative to
negotiate on their behalf. Pat Stetler remained the MVC's employees representative.
MFC investigated how the other involved Locals addressed the issues with their members. It was
found that members in these other locals were kept abreast of negotiations of the work week change.
Indeed, members were surveyed on how they felt and their input about this change.
On 7/10/10 MFC/MVC employees circulated a petition for signature to reject Roeder's resolution.
After MFC/MVC employees had left, Roeder was observed heading to the 8th Floor of MVC with the
Local's Attorney, Walter Bliss in tow.
We shall keep you up to date on what transpires.
