KNOW THE ISSUES WHAT ARE THE ISSUES? THE THREE MAJOR PROGRAMS OF THE CWA UNION The triangle symbolizes the three major programs of the union: representation, organizing, and community/political action. None can stand alone. If the triangle is broken on any side, sooner or later it will be broken on every side. CWA's founding president, Joseph Beirne, called this the "triple threat." President John F. Kennedy said: “Those who would destroy or further limit the rights of Organized labor---those who cripple collective bargaining or prevent organization of the unorganized—do a disservice to the cause of democracy.” This Local is broken and we must fix it together. Not a single “threat” exist under the Roeder Administration. The Union Constitution and Local Bylaws mandate that these programs be implemented and staffed by committees of members of this Local, but is ignored by the Roeder Administration. This Local has indeed committed “a disservice to the cause of democracy” because this Local does not exist as a Union. Organizing Committee - This committee of members assist the administration in developing strategies to identify and organize the unorganized workers of New Jersey----to build a strong foundation as a political activist/lobbying group. Unions are special interest groups. Corporate special interest group’s strength is solely campaign contributions and kickbacks. Our strength lies in people power----the power to elect through our Community Actions. This is the only CWA Local that is not growing by organizing the unorganized private sector employees. Why, because Roeder does not want to fall under the purview of Federal Law, the Federal Labor Management Reporting Disclosure Act (LMRDA). This federal law was enacted to stop union corruption and make unions accountable to their memberships. This law is only applicable to unions that represent members in private industry and does not apply to unions that represents only public or government employees. Perfect for the Roeder Administration to come under the radar and do as they please. Legislative-Political Action Committee – This committee assist the administration in developing and pursuing the collective political programs of the Union to obtain favorable terms and conditions of employment and implementation of laws that affect us as citizens in the community. As it stands now the only politician Roeder endorses is Bill Baroni, a member of the minority Republican Party, who is totally powerless at this point in time. Community Action Committee – This committee assist the administration in developing strategies to: mobilize with community action groups to fight for laws that affect our communities, such as bringing jobs back to America; address negative public perceptions of public employees, where we are blamed for the budget crisis and everything else that’s wrong with government as spun by the government and other special interest groups. Under Roeder we march around in small rag-tag groups begging for public support for the poor public worker---the economy is in a recession, the public need jobs and could care less about poor state workers. Representation Committee – To assist in preparing Elected Representatives- 4 Bargaining Unit Vice Presidents; 11 Area Representatives and all shop stewards to effectively represent the members; identifying and planning strategies on broad-based arbitration and negotiations on issues that affect the membership as a whole. Do you know your Unit Vice President, or area representative or shop steward? Do you have the confidence in them to represent you effectively? Editorial/Publishing Committee – A committee to develop a website presence in bringing this Local into the 21st Century in sharing information and receiving feedback from the members; educating the members; Cyber-lobbying our municipal, state and federal elected officials on those issues that affect us; Cyber-mobilizing with other Locals and community action groups. At present this Local is functioning in the past with a non- descriptive website, periodic expensive mass mailings a day late and a dollar short----basically unresponsive and uncompetitive to the needs of the members in this Cyber-World of Information. None of these union building programs and committees exist under the Roeder administration. Why? Because Roeder wants total control to make decisions, without input from any mandated committee or anyone else for that matter. To keep members in the dark about how the functioning of this Local. These are the issues. It is time to change this Local into a Union that is proactive and responsive to the members and the community. Unions fundamentally provide the backbone in ensuring we have a voice at the table of government. Notably unionized membership has shrunk to 9% of the entire workforce nationwide---the result, corporate profits having priority over building America, creating an unfair economy where citizens of this country cannot participate in the American Dream. The Resolution is we must take back our Local from Roeder, install the three main programs and get members involved in these committees to create a real democratic union to do the work for our future. |
